Text: Fiero, The Humanistic Tradition. Vol. I. 4th ed.
Objectives: Increased awareness of the development of the humanities in the culture of the West. Particular emphasis on the continuities linking the cultures of the Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance worlds to our own, with attention to how non-western cultures have influenced ours as well.
Assessment: Demonstration on essay midterm and final examinations and in out-of-class papers of the continuities of cultural traditions.
Formal Requirements: Three papers, midterm and final examinations. Papers will focus on each of the three historical areas of the course: the ancient, the medieval, and the early modern worlds.
Attendance: Class attendance and participation are expected. 80% attendance is required for successful completion of the course regardless of circumstances.
Grading: Tests will be graded on a hundred-point scale. Papers will receive letter grades. All work, including participation, will count toward the final grade for the course. Each component, paper or test, will count about 20%, and participation will decide borderline grades.
