The
Blessed Consistency of Bars
Kristin
Haynes
Timepiece,
1997
the girl/woman in black and tulle
stands
at the bar behind the wood and glass
showcase
and bottles, to be talked at by
the man
who wants a drink or bite of the
orange
fruit that sits in bowls of glass
or
perhaps he is proposing a bite of
her,
asking if she thinks maybe he still
has
what it takes to do a little number
on
her favors. she is waiting
for the next
one in line. and he's too
busy crying
and cajoling to notice that he's
just
trying to find the door to his own
truth
(or force himself onto someone else's)
and so
he begs for the consumption of the
barmaid,
because he believes that the knock
of youth
can change and open the knock of
loss.
